Pulse Mgmt Ali Stephens takes Paris

Though Ali Michael’s on a plane to Texas, plenty of other lean-legged girls have been pounding Paris’s pavement. Aline Weber and Ali Stephens snagged the first and last spots, respectively, at Balenciaga; Coco opened the fur-tastic Gaultier; Look’s favorite face, Siri Tollerød, continues to live up to the buzz and opened Christian Lacroix. And for Alessandra Facchinetti’s debut, the designer selected Vlada Roslyakova to close the Valentino show for the first time ever. However, Italian icon Mariacarla Boscono has practically owned Paris, closing Givenchy and Karl Lagerfeld and opening Costume National. For these crowning achievements, we're giving her the win for now. —Kendall Herbst

Natalia, Sasha, Jessica, Gemma — we all know the runways' favorite girls. But every Fashion Week brings a crop of fresh faces. From a former cross-country star to the new face of Nina Ricci, here’s who will be dominating the New York catwalks this February.

Ali Stephens

At just 16, this former cross-country star from Utah already has major shows under her belt. After signing to Elite in September 2007, she hit the runways in Europe mere weeks later. She debuted at Prada (as an exclusive) in Milan, then proceeded to walk the top shows in Paris: Balenciaga, Chanel, and Givenchy. She also snagged Chloé spring campaign, her solo face replacing the Anja Rubik, Shalom Harlow, and Freja Beha triumvirate. And she’s nailed down the M Missoni and ck by Calvin Klein ads as well. Confirmed to walk in New York for the first time this February, the blue-eyed beauty has a good chance of being in Francisco Costa's Calvin Klein lineup.

Courtney Smerski
This Washingtonian is following in the footsteps of September’s breakthrough blondes Siri Tollerød and Toni Garrn. Last season she was booked with rising designers like Jenni Kayne and Chris Benz. But her career really took off after landing the Mario Sorrenti–photographed Nina Ricci spring 2008 campaign alongside Karlie Kloss. Expect her New York show schedule to be upgraded this time around.

Scrapbook: Moments From Milan

Bright, bright young things. Even Naomi.Photos: Lindsay and Naomi courtesy of Getty; all others Imaxtree

If you haven’t been flown over to soak in the twinkling excesses of Milan Fashion Week, here’s what you’ve missed. Clockwise from top left: An exhausted Anouck yawned in line at Prada. Carine looked fab in front-row fur at Missoni. Hamish Bowles waited at Jil Sander with a camera-shy Virginia Smith. Suvi Koponen kept it low-key with a game of solitaire at Roberto Cavalli. Typically reserved pals Ali Stephens and Karlie Kloss embraced in front of the lens. And most recently, Lindsay and Naomi performed the classic rite of the air-kiss at Dolce & Gabbana. Now exhale, and get ready for Paris! —Kendall Herbst

Ali Stephens Back Stage

To get this project started, we sent Magnum photographer, Christopher Anderson, into the wilds of the Fashion Weeks. He shadowed ascendant model Ali Stephens, the established but still indie designer Maria Cornejo, the ineluctable superstar Karl Lagerfeld, and two less visible stars—stylist Katie Grand, and hair wizard Eugene Souleiman. We honed the trends, from classic (we’re overjoyed to report, black is still back) to sexily regressive (lace!) to recklessly avant-garde (collars now resemble origami). At the end of this pursuit, there may not be agreement on a singular image or individual that represented a definitive moment, but the affair is now at least confined to the pages here. Immediate and thorough; that’s as singular as a fashion magazine can get.

All these photographers are in search of the same thing—a couple of crisp, clear shots that will get worldwide pick up and be their bread-and-butter until next season. Sometimes pre-show tension gets so thick in the photographers’ stands that fights break out over who sits and stands where. That’s how one of fashion’s subcultures gets the job done; others, like New York designer Maria Cornejo, follow the routines of daily life (make the kid’s lunch, clean out the cat’s litter box) while hammering out the details of her show. The young models (like our face of the season, Ali Stephens) take catnaps in the makeup chair and goof around backstage to keep their nerves in check. But once that first heel hits the runway, the jitters stop and it’s all business.

Our number one girl to watch IS Ali Stephens CK

Though our number one girl to watch, Ali Stephens, has just been confirmed as a Calvin exclusive, there was still plenty of eye candy on day one. Hilary Rhoda strutted the catwalk at Rag & Bone as Gisele Bündchen watched from the front row. Tanya Dziahileva filled in for an MIA Sasha Pivovarova to open the show. But yesterday's winner was Elsa Sylvan, who came off a smoking-hot couture week (where she walked Vava, Chanel, Givenchy, and Lacroix), to open Yigal with a bang. —Kendall Herbst

Or if that were you? We know we'd die.

CK TOP MODEL 08 ALI STEPHENS

Ali Stephens Yes, we know Stephens appeared in only one show, but that was her good call. For her first New York Fashion Week booking, she declined over 30 offers to instead open Calvin Klein. Avoiding overexposure, this chocolate-cake-eating, MTV-watching eleventh-grader has us eager for more of her long-legged walk in London.

Thursday’s catwalks were full of unexpected moments. Karen Elson took a tumble closing Zac Posen and Diddy helped her up. Aussie Abbey Lee flashed her nipple piercing beneath a sheer top at an otherwise demure Calvin Klein show. Former cross-country runner Ali Stephens opened Klein for an impressive debut on Stateside runways. She’s our top girl to watch this week and takes Thursday herself. —Kendall Herbst

Before she was closing Balenciaga shows, became the face of Calvin Klein, and landed editorials in Italian Vogue, Ali Stephens was just a regular kid. She wore khakis to her first day of third grade, hammed it up for the camera in costume, and took pictures with Shamu. Don’t believe us? Take a quick look at her childhood photos. There's more intriguing evidence of her being a normal kid after the jump. —Kendall Herbst

PULSE MGMT’S ALI STEPHENS

2. Ali Stephens (Elite) (PULSE MGMT)

"Ali is yet another girl who had Milan exclusives and exploded onto the scene pretty late. Therefore it may be surprising to see her this high up on the chart. However, I really think her great fit and classic beauty is going to keep her at the top through the autumn shows in February. For Spring 2008, Ali opened Chloé and booked pretty much every other top show in Paris, from Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and Miu Miu all the way through to Dries Van Noten, Chanel, and Givenchy. Breaking in the next few months: her much-lauded Chloé by Craig McDean, plus upcoming work with David Sims, Patrick Demarchelier, Mikael Jansson, Alasdair McLellan, Terry Tsiolis, Richard Bush, and Daniel Jackson, among others."

TOP 10 RUNWAY GIRLS OF 08 WORLD OVER

It was a season in which the most coveted slots were reserved for the comeback kids (Mariacarla Boscono, Isabeli Fontana, Erin Wasson, and new mom Natalia Vodianova). But there were still plenty of fresh faces to see—and challenging names to try not to mispronounce. Here are ten of the most memorable, from Lithuania's Edita Vilkeviciute to Ukraine's Lera Sheremata.

This Utah high school student and track star sprinted onto the runway only a few weeks after getting signed. Following a Prada exclusive, she wrapped up the season with an enviable Paris show list.

Blaze of Glory

Before being discovered last year at the local mall, Ali Stephens was a cross-country star at her Salt Lake City high school. No wonder she raced onto the modeling scene with record speed, scoring a spring 2008 Prada exclusive in Milan.

Ali Stephens W Cover

Ali Stephens, Cover Virgin No More

Korean W magazinePhoto: Elite Model Management
After she opened Calvin Klein and closed Balenciaga, it was anyone’s guess what Ali Stephens’s first cover would be. After walking 46 shows this past season, she must have made an impression on the front-row biggies. We suspected Teen Vogue since she’s just a smiley 16-year-old herself and doesn’t do racy swimwear or lingerie shoots yet. But we were totally wrong. Korean W booked her first. (Side note: Interesting how much English text is on the cover, no?) Shot by David Byun, Stephens wears a sleeveless, peach blouse and floral skirt, with her hair piled in a large bun atop her head. Though the foreign publication doesn’t have a huge following here, Stephens will also appear in a David Sims–photographed Italian Vogue editorial come April. That one’s surely worth the hefty exchange rate. —Kendall Herbst

Ali Stephens Calvin Klein Campaign

After checking out the latest Calvin Klein campaign, we were looking forward to seeing how the ck Calvin Klein ads would shape up. Now the first images have hit and they star, as predicted, fall-show opener and current all-around "It" girl Ali Stephens. If you embrace the minimal aesthetics of Calvin Klein, you’ll approve: Stephens appears with slicked-back hair, heavy brows, and a simple moss-green pantsuit. (If you're more of a Cavalli person, you might be a bit bored by the whole thing, however.) What really caught our eye most is how much Ali and Toni Garnn (the face of the Calvin Klein collection) are starting to look alike. Might we have another Sasha/Gemma dilemma? —Kendall Herbst
