Elite / Market Station Groundbreaking
A set of photo highlights from the Elite / Market Station groundbreaking celebration in South Salt Lake Saturday evening

Elite Crew at The Playground
Some of the Pulse Management / Elite Model Management was hanging out at The Playground in Park City Utah. I decided to go say hello and take some photos. Entertainment was provided by DJ K and DJ Miss Lisa!

The Park City Playground

The Park City Playground hosted a party featuring DJ Miss Lisa and DJ K, with some VIPs from Pulse Management as guests. In case you haven’t heard, Pulse Management has partnered with Elite Model Management. They’re building a new office in Salt Lake City, and the groundbreaking celebration is today. Last night’s event was just a relaxed get-together. Today they’re taking over a block of Main Street for X-sports, a runway show, and more DJ performances from Diggabeatz and DJ Miss Lisa. Should be one hell of a show! Check out last night’s full gallery.

Elite Model Management Breaks Ground in Salt Lake

Last night I met Neal Hamil, director of Elite Model Management’s North American operations at the groundbreaking ceremony for Elite’s new office, the first major tenant in the $500 million Market Station real estate project in South Salt Lake (which Elite dubbed “SoSaLa”). Market Station is project by Utopia Station Development Corp., directed by Steve Aste.

The celebration featured dj’s, breakdancers, a half-pipe x-sports show, helicopter fly-ins, a base jumper with a golden shovel, a fashion show contest for “Utah’s Next Top Model”, some words from the Mayor of “SoSoLa” and the state governor’s office, performances by Utah’s legendary scratch DJ, Diggabeatz, and his dance crew, and a headlining dj set by DJ Miss Lisa, which kept the enthusiastic crowd’s hands in the air until the party ended at 1:00am. The celebration occupied an entire city block and people were literally dancing in the street until the music was shut off and the crowd started chanting, “One more song! One more song!”

Model recruiting efforts in Utah will be managed by Stacey Eastman, founder of Pulse Management. The company has successfully scouted and placed seven Vogue cover models from Utah. Also in attendance at the event was Elite’s newest runway sensation, Ali Stephens, who was discovered on an outing with her family in Salt Lake City’s Gateway Mall, and made her modeling debut walking for Prada in Milan, quickly followed by shows for Chanel, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and a whole lot more.

The runway show featured jeans by Danny Nappi, and hair / makeup by Vanity Hair Extensions. Liquid refreshment and entertainment booking was provided by the Park City Playground.

All told, I think the event was a resounding success. I’m sure those who attended will be buzzing about it, and what it means for Utah’s fashion industry. I have a feeling it’s about to get a major shot in the arm - and as a photographer who loves living in Salt Lake City, I couldn’t be happier about that!

Fab Party!

Congratulations on a fab party Saturday night! Phenomenal plans came to fruition for all involved ... from the impressive helicopter entrance to the 1/2 pipe and everything in-between. We were elated to have witnessed the momentous occasion. Best of every good thing as the months ahead reveal the next phase.

Warmly,
Wendy & Keola Kamahele and Katy Kamahele

South Salt Lake development may be 'rising' too (ABC 4 News)

(ABC 4 News)
Reported by: Annie Cutler
Last Update: 3/27 11:24 pm
SOUTH SALT LAKE , Utah (ABC 4 News) - If downtown is rising, well, so is South Salt Lake . A huge development project, named "Market Station" is underway on 2100 South and Main Street . Those involved boast that this development will change the face of not just South Salt Lake , but the entire valley. Developers says they're confident that once it's completed, the new community will rival Downtown.

Of course it won't all be built at once. Rather, the whole project will be done in phases over the next five to seven years. When all is said and done words like “run down” and “dangerous” won't be part of the description. Driving near 2100 South between Main and State Streets, you’ll see abandoned buildings with blown out windows, graffiti tagged walls, and overall wreckage of an area long neglected.

By 2015, that area will look completely different. “Market Station,” a 500 million dollar project will create - for the first time in decades - a community with residential housing, office buildings and retail space. Developer Steve Aste says, “We're taking blighted, run down older buildings, vacant lots, and turning it into a high density urban village if you will.” This project will offer more than just brand new state of the art buildings with luxuries like rooftop tennis courts, pools, and gardens.

The hope for this development is that it will change how we all think of South Salt Lake . Aste says, “What we're trying to create is a community where people can live , work, recreate, never have to get in their car if they choose not to.” City officials say the timing for something like this right, and the need has been here for years. South Salt Lake Mayor Robert Gray says, “We used to have an old saying that you couldn't buy a shirt in South Salt Lake and that was true, we couldn't, there was no retail to speak of at all and this is gonna change that whole outlook.”

It's no fluke that this particular area was chosen for such a project. Being a stone's throw away from I-80 and I-15, it will even have a commuter tram that will shuttle residents to and from TRAX and Sugarhouse. "Market Station" has the potential to be a hub for those of us already there, and those who want a taste of the action. Gray says, “This is gonna change the entire image of the city and it's way better than what the image used to be.”

Perhaps no one knows about image better than the agents at Elite Model Management, an internationally known talent agency that's making their new home across the street from the planned project.

Stacey Eastman, Partner of Elite Model Management says, “In conjunction with the project that's going on, the development, the growth of this community, we want to be able to place a stronghold and have a presence of our world famous brand within this market.” This world famous company is just a glimpse of what this project is expected to attract into South Salt Lake , and our Beehive state.

Eastman says, “ South Salt Lake 's where it's at, it's the future.” "Market Station" will also be a great place for those of us who love the outdoors. The site will have direct access to both the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and Jordan River Parkway Trail. Developers say the project is sure to bring in thousands of new jobs and millions in tax revenue that will help improve the area's schools and other public service agencies.

Elite Model opening office in South Salt Lake - Deseret News May 31st 2008

Pulse Management

An artist's rendering depicts a building that will be located at 2150 S. Main in South Salt Lake.
It will house Elite Model Management.

SOUTH SALT LAKE — Offices for one of the world's foremost modeling agencies are opening here today, providing a ticket out for young Utah women with their sights set on modeling haute couture in Paris, Milan and New York

Elite Model Management, which has discovered supermodels like Alessandra Ambrosio and Coco Rocha, will have scouting offices in South Salt Lake in a partnership with Pulse Management.

Neal Hamil, Elite's North America director, said the new "look" is all-American. "We're seeing the return to the American model," said Hamil, who turned Naomi Campbell into a supermodel while president at Ford Models. "We had the Brazilians. We had the quirky English. We've had the Russians. The (Utah) girls typify American beauty: They're tall, blond, light eyes. And
they're nice."

Hamil has had luck in Utah in the past by working through Pulse Management. Pulse discovered East High student Ali Stephens, who launched her career modeling for Milan fashion houses Prada, Gucci and Versace.

But not all faces in Utah resemble northern Europeans. In fact, Pulse discovered Korean-American Hye Rim Park, an Olympus High graduate whose face has graced eight Vogue covers.

Here's how the relationship between Pulse and Elite works: Pulse, based in Oregon with offices throughout the West, will find models for Elite, Hamil said, and Elite will work with the models to develop their talent and find them work with designers and fashion magazines. If Elite isn't interested in a model, Pulse will find other agencies.

Pulse founder Stacey Eastman also has an extreme-sports management company and represents people looking to get into film.

Utahns, while nice, are also conservative, and that can create problems in the fashion industry. Eastman says models need to realize that refusing edgy work will mean less money. But he points out that if a model is good, she'll become successful on her own merits. Ali Stephens, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is an example.

"Sure, she won't be doing those jobs that are a little more risque," he said. "But at the end of the day, there's far more important things in life than money."

Model Danna Lee Ballard, 20, originally from Pleasant Grove, is represented by both Elite and Pulse. Elite lines up her shoots and casting calls. But Pulse also negotiates for her. If she needs a break during a shoot, she says she calls Eastman, and he talks with the photographer, which avoids hostility between the model and client.

Ballard was discovered at age 12 when she was looking for work as a television extra. "I was a freak of nature," Ballard said. "I was 6 feet tall in the sixth grade."

But her career has taken her to 22 countries in Asia and Europe. For a year, she lived in Paris. Her magazine covers include Glamour in Italy, Elle in France and Vogue in Russia.

But while many young women in Utah will seek modeling work through Elite and Pulse, Ballard warns parents to be wary of scouts and agencies that lack solid reputations. And Eastman says plenty of beautiful men and women never get work because modeling requires a specific look that's described as a science — having the right bone structure, a symmetric face and a genuine personality that comes across the camera. Women need to be 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall.

Having parents that are cool also helps. "We deal with more parents that want this for themselves than their daughters actually do," Eastman said. "So they're vicariously living through their child — the stage mom, the stage dad."

The modeling offices are located in the first building of the $500 million Market Station real estate project, centered around 2150 S. Main, developed by Utopia Station Development Corp. They are scheduled to move across the street into the location of the current Manny's Bar & Grill, 2105 S. Main, in about two years when a building there is complete.

Steve Aste of Utopia said the 18-acre, mixed-use Market Station project will be finished in six years and will feature 900 condos and some office and retail space.

The modeling agency decided to open its offices in Market Station when Eastman of Pulse met with Aste, whose 15-year-old daughter, Anja, is represented by Pulse and Elite, Aste said.

Off the Agenda: South Salt Lake gets moniker makeover

Elite Takes on Salt Lake City
Move over, SoHo and SoCal. Utah now has its own chichi abbreviation.
Elite Model Management - the haute talent agency featured on the TV hit "America's Next Top Model" - has rechristened South Salt Lake as "SoSaLa" before it moves into the industrial 'burg this week.
A handbill announcing Saturday's grand opening invites guests to the new Market Station in "SoSaLa." It also touts the list of maybe-more-elite cities where the agency already has offices: New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and Toronto.
"And now," proclaims the flier, "South Salt Lake City."
Those familiar with South Salt Lake - Elite's new office is moving into a developing area at 2150 S. Main St. - might be confused by the handbill's backdrop. It shows a downtown Salt Lake City skyline, complete with the LDS temple.
But picking a site in Utah's capital wouldn't have spawned such a great nickname for Elite's newest office. "SaLa" doesn't have quite the same ring as "SoSaLa."
* * *
Eat, drink and be wary: So, if the Legislature whacks those pesky private-club memberships (as the governor has urged), all the perceptions (and misperceptions) about Utah's loony liquor laws will evaporate - right?
Tourists will flock here. Conventioneers will converge. Big businesses will bust down the doors. Everything will be wine and roses.
It's not that simple, says Salt Lake City's newly anointed economic-development czar.
"It's always a bit of an issue when you're trying to roll out the welcome mat," explains Bob Farrington, the former Downtown Alliance boss and newest member of Mayor Ralph Becker's team. "Any misperceptions people may have about the city become an obstacle for visiting or investing. But I don't want to make [elimination of the private-club rule] seem like Shangri-La."
Got it. Paradise still may be lost. But the change would make it easier for a drink to be found.
* * *
Where there's smoke, there's lawbreaking: When Jen Tischler was making her case for banning smoking in Utah County parks, she used bags of cigarette butts collected by volunteers to illustrate the problem.
But it seems that Tischler and the teens she oversees in the Outrage anti-tobacco group didn't have to go too far from the Health and Justice Building to make her point. Tischler presented the Utah County Board of Health with a one-gallon bag of butts the teens picked up right outside the Health Department's headquarters.
Many of the cigarettes, TischÂler said, were picked up within 25 feet of the building's doors, evidence that smokers were flouting the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act, which bans smoking within 25 feet of the entrances to public buildings.
The board agreed to work on an outdoor-smoking ban. Maybe it will consider enforcing the existing law around its own building as well.
* * *
Tag - it's no game: Provo's Municipal Council is considering ways to crack down on graffiti - and signs may play a part.
A proposed ordinance originally would have required sellers of paint, broad-tipped markers and other tagging tools to keep such wares locked up in the same way tobacco is in stores.
To avoid the added expense to shopkeepers, though, the ordinance was amended to merely require signs warning people that spreading graffiti is a crime.
Councilwoman Midge Johnson thinks that may be enough.
"You go into department stores and there are signs that say shoplifting is a crime," Johnson said. "It deters people."
"Has it helped you?" Councilman Steve Turley asked.
"I haven't stolen anything in a long time," Johnson quipped.
